A Discovery Instrument

A Doorway

A view of what's possible
Prepared for Dylan Jones

A thinking tool built for you, hand-assembled from thirty years of your career history. It proposes fifteen ways your signature could earn · mapped across four approaches and scored against seven criteria. Star what catches you. Ignore the rest. The pathways you hold are where the work begins.

From Scarlet · a personal note

Hey Dylan,

I built this for you because the next chapter of your work deserves a thinking-tool that respects thirty years of who you have already been. Not a quiz. Not a personality type. Not generic startup advice.

What you are walking is a custom version of a wider app I am building, called What the Startup. You are the first walker. The full system, that will eventually generate this kind of experience for anyone standing at a similar fork, is still in design.

Take what serves you. Leave what does not. The map remembers where you have been.

About this version

What is here

This site is a custom v1, hand-built from your career evidence and the patterns Scarlet noticed across it. Fifteen pathways scored against seven criteria, three of them with a full Deep Map walking the route from offer to first proof. Browser-saved progress on stage moves, saved pathways, and the page you last left off on.

What is being built in the full app

  • An eight-door guided conversation that generates the Self Map for any user from their own answers
  • Live pathway previews generated from that Self Map, ranked by a dual head and body fit model
  • Deep Maps for every chosen pathway, not just three
  • A walking-partner AI that answers in context on every page of the walk
  • A dignified return ritual when life shifts · the map updates without you having to start again

Why it looks like this for now

What you see is the texture of what the wider app will deliver to everyone, shown here at full depth for you specifically. The architecture holds. What is missing is the generation layer that will eventually do for any walker what Scarlet did for you by hand.

01 Profile

What the data says you already are.

Synthesised from thirty years of career history. Nothing invented. Every line is joining dots that were already on your CV.

Take a physical system. Wire intelligence into it. Make it behave elegantly and reliably, without anyone having to touch it again. This has been the through-line since 1995. Water treatment in the West Kimberley. Process control at PSN. Reliability engineering for Water Corp. Animatronics for StageWorks. Inventory optimisation for IBM. Home lighting logic for a house in Perth. The industries changed. The signature didn't.
You are not a product manager. You are an engineer-philosopher who has spent thirty years at the intersection of physical systems and human ones.
You know what a PLC feels like at 2am in the Kimberley. You also know how to own a global SaaS product's P&L. You are fluent in the grease and the boardroom. And almost nobody else is. The CFO trusts you because you understand the cost model; the electrician trusts you because you've held the wrench yourself.
Take these one at a time. There's no test at the end.

    05 The Journey

What the walk actually feels like.

The bigger picture · the rhythm of a build, what helps it move, who's already walking it with you. Not a sprint. Not a solo. A deliberate unfolding you can shape as you go.

What this tool is This is v0 of a discovery instrument: it reads a career history and proposes a portfolio of next-chapter business models, mapped across four approaches and scored against seven criteria. It's meant to be played with, not read. Star what interests you, ignore the rest. The shortlist is the only output that matters.
Take these one at a time. None of them are due now.

    The three phases

    Witness · pressure-test · build

    What helps · what skips

Phase-one discipline · keep it clean

    What helps

      What skips

        You're not alone

Communities · support · the small hacks that save you

The build will have stretches that feel slow, stretches that feel uncertain, and stretches that feel like flying. None of them are the whole picture. What matters is that you don't have to walk any of them in isolation.

The world already has communities, practitioners, and quiet helpers walking the same shape of road. Some are free, some are paid, some you only need at specific points. Here's a map of where to lean.

        01

        Communities to plug into

        Free · ongoing

Peer-level people walking the same shape of road. Not selling to you, just thinking out loud beside you.

        • AMC · Asset Management Council (AU) · chapters in every state, monthly events, the deepest concentration of your tribe in the country.
        • SMRP · Society for Maintenance & Reliability Professionals · the global counterpart. Conferences, body of knowledge, certifications if useful later.
        • Reliabilityweb · Uptime community · long-form practitioner content, lively comment threads, easy on-ramps to speaking.
        • LinkedIn circles you already touch · the IAM Anatomy series is already pulling the right people in. Treat the comments as a permanent water-cooler.
        • Local builder-business circles · WA-based founders, micro-mastermind groups. Not industry-specific. Different kind of fuel.
        02

        When to bring someone in

        Paid · at specific points

Some moments cost less to outsource than to white-knuckle. The trick is knowing which moments those are.

        • Before the first invoice · a one-call session with an accountant who works with sole traders or consultants. Sets up structure cleanly the first time.
        • Before exiting IBM · an employment lawyer for one hour to read the non-compete and intellectual-property clauses. Quietly important.
        • When the offer firms up · a designer for a one-page service sheet. Not a brand identity. Just a clean artefact that travels by email.
        • When admin starts eating evenings · a VA for 4–6 hours a week. Inbox triage, scheduling, light CRM. Buys back the thinking time.
        • When a proposal starts feeling big · borrow a proposal writer for one round, not a permanent one. Templates emerge from that single engagement.
        03

Small hacks · the workflow stuff

Free · as the shape clicks

Once you start mapping your strengths and what you'd rather hand off, these are the levers that quietly compound.

        • Capture-first, process-later · keep a single voice-memo or note app on your phone for ideas mid-day. Process once a week, not in real time.
        • One reusable proposal skeleton · same structure, swap the specifics. The first one is slow. The next ten are fast.
        • Office hours over inboxes · one or two windows a week for synchronous calls. The rest of the time, async. Protects the deep-thinking blocks.
        • Decision logs, not decision meetings · write the decision and the why in a single doc. Read-only for clients. Cuts repeat-meeting drag in half.
        • One scheduling link · one payment link · two clean URLs you can drop into any conversation. Removes 80% of admin friction.
Coming next · in the wider ecosystem

What this page becomes, as the full What the Startup app builds out around it, is a living library Scarlet is mapping for every walker:

        • Free downloadable templates · tracking sheets, decision logs, FMECA-lite skeletons, proposal frames.
        • A members' consultant portal · access to the working tools, walked-with-you support, peer cohort.
        • Coaching and advisory pathways · one-to-one for the stretches where solo isn't the move.
        • A "second doorway" exit · for when one chapter completes and the next shape is asking to be found.

For now, this layer is the bones. You'll feel where it wants to grow.
